Status

We really seem to base a lot of our self-worth on our status. Loosely defined, to speak of someones status means to speak of their position in relation to other people. It is sort of like seeing how someone measures up with the rest of society. I guess this isn’t such a bad thing, except we seem to get our measuring sticks from all the wrong places. We define ourselves based on who the world says we are. We let society determine what we think about ourselves. We let the culture around us guide our actions. The truth is, culture and society change. How can we be measured by something that is never the same? Things were a certain way in the 60′s and then they were different in the 70′s. Although current fashion may have a hint of the 70′s, things today are very different than they were just 30 years ago.

I encourage you to come and be a part of youth group this week as we begin a look at the Book of Ephesians. This week we will be discussing your status. I promise you, the discussion will be encouraging. And the source of this status will never change.

So, what are your thoughts on status and self-worth? Do you feel that society should be the ultimate measuring stick for who we are? Why or why not? I look forward to your comments…

One Response to “Status”

Status and self-worth are very much related. But, satus is very hard to pin-point to a certain group of people. We have the ever aparent “social class” which is mostly based on money and power . Then on the younger side of things we have the ” clicks” in high school. But, these clicks and social standing, i dont believe, are what give people there self-worth. With-in those diffrent groups ther is standing, or specific roles, and based on a role a person might find self-worth. But, everyone wants to feel needed in the world; so, to say that satus is what gives people their self-worth is a liltle to general. It is the idea or thought that one is needed that gives a person the relief that they DO have worth. So society is not the stick that tells us weather we have self-worth it is the stick that divides us into groups and classes. With-in those classes we get our self-worth from the role we play. So my question is …. should we be put in those diffrent classes? I believe to spread the good news of JC we should bridge the classes, but not brake. because i think god put those classes in place to add order. Because if we didnt have classes or groups there would be to many leaders and to many fights.
